FIBER WORKSHOP POSSIBILITIES

I am teaching workshops with many different fiber venues. Recently I have added quilting guilds and surface design as I share my processes of digital design and printing on fabric. These are just some ideas - I'd be happy to develop a workshop specifically for your group and your needs.

1-2 Day Workshop

"Digital Designs from your Life Images"

I have found that digital design and fibers go hand-in-hand. This is an introduction to using Adobe PhotoShop Elements (an affordable yet powerful version of PhotoShop). By learning how to use layers, filters and playing with hue/contrast/saturation you will be amazed at the powerful art you can create with your own images. 3 - 5 Day Workshop

“Self-Portraits: Art in our Own Image”

Self-Portraits - they are powerful and revealing, fun and silly, all at once. I’ll introduce three techniques for acquiring images: using a digital camera held at arms length, contour drawing (this technique is used in Playing the Hand You're Dealt), and finally from snapshots of moments of your lives. This incorporates the beginning workshop with PhotoShop Elements 2.0 but gives each student more time to explore the program and continues through printing on silk and creating a finished piece (hopefully!).

SPEAKING POSSIBILITIES

I have been a counselor, a high school teacher and an artist. It all comes together in my talks and workshops. I use my fiber and digital art to illustrate my talks at mental health and fiber conferences and to cancer support and faith groups. Here are some talks I have developed, but I always create a talk specifically for each situation.

Presentation - "Playing the Hand You're Dealt"

This started out being a talk for Cancer Support groups but soon it was pointed out to me that this is what we all do in life - we do the best we can with the hand we're dealt. It's about finding your inner strength and joy and appreciating each day.

Presentation - "Heeding the Call and Unlocking your Creativity"

By heeding the call of fiber I have discovered the 'Rules' for unlocking your Creativity - and they just happen to be pretty good Rules for Life!

Presentation -"Finding Hope and Reclaiming Your Spirit"

Using art and humor, I share stories that help to illuminate your path to a more hopeful life.

-Accompanying Workshop - "Creating Your Path to Hopefulness"

Life experiences have been wonderful teachers for me. I have discovered that life has new joy when viewed through eyes of hope, no matter what is happening in your life. Create your personal path to a more hopeful life by participating in an experiential workshop that incorporates private introspective & group activities.

5 Day Workshop

Fabric Mosaics – from PhotoShop to Fabric Dyeing to Art Quilt!

Use Adobe PhotoShop to easily incorporate meaningful images from your life into your art, helping it become a more powerful form of self-expression. Using personal photos, students will take their own digital design and create a fabric mosaic from it. Students will dye fabrics with fiber reactive dyes (and get to play with all of Deb’s interesting dyeing techniques to achieve spectacular variegated fabrics), cut them into small pieces, then layer them to create a mosaic of their original image. Finally, students will have the opportunity to layer wool between the two layers and free-motion quilt.

3-5 Day Workshop

“Painterly Tapestry Weaving”

Students will paint silk and wool top to spin for their wefts for tapestry weaving. This is a fun and exciting way to achieve a more painterly look in your tapestry weaving. This technique is highlighted in a Summer 2006 article in Spin Off magazine,

3-5 Day Workshop

“Digital Design meets Tapestry Weaving”

Using the powerful design tool of Adobe PhotoShop Elements 2.0, students develop a design to weave using tapestry techniques and begin weaving their art. This can be done on a simple frame loom that students can take home with them.

All of the pieces in the Art Gallery were digitally designed.
